Arthur Mellows Village College

Delivering learning for life within an aspirational culture

Young Carers

Arthur Mellows Village College, in partnership with https://carers.org/, is now providing for Young Carers. We do this by promoting positive images and information about disability, illness and young carers. We consult and listen to young carers ensuring they have the time and space to talk. We intend to embed them in existing school systems to monitor their wellbeing in the same way as other vulnerable pupil groups. We know this is vital because it reduces stigma and ensures a positive ethos where young carers feel safe and confident in accessing support, whilst promoting self-identification where a young carer may self-identify to a member of staff whom they feel they can talk to, creating long term change where young carers are on a similar footing to other vulnerable pupils.

Please contact Mrs N Levy at nlevy@arthurmellows.org if your child would like any support within the College.

We work to reduce the negative impact of young peoples caring roles, we often do this via 1-1 support which is time limited (4-6 sessions) and will focus on what the young person feels they need at the time. This could be (but is not limited to): understanding their cared for persons condition, reducing isolation, signposting to relevant services and supporting them to engage with those, advocating on their behalf with professionals they or their family are supported by. When making a referral it’s helpful if you can indicate what outcomes and expectations the young person has for their referral. We do not offer respite activities for young carers, but we do support schools to set up this provision – if you need support with this, please reach out.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting us.
