Guidance to Assessment

All work that students are required to carry out will be used to inform staff when making decisions relating to teaching groups and levels of entry for external and internal examinations. This will include work in lessons, homework, topic tests and end of year examinations.

Process

  • Students work will be marked in line with the school assessment policy.
  • Subjects will provide both formative and summative assessment throughout the year. Formative assessment takes place during a unit of work and allows students to improve as they go along. Summative assessment takes place at the end of a unit of work and provides a final level/grade/comment for that topic.
  • When monitoring or assessing students’ work, staff may give an indication of level / grade of attainment and how to access the higher level / grade. When using a level / grade, feedback should be linked to success criteria/mark schemes, be specific and meaningful and based on what the student can do to improve
  • Students should be given the opportunity to act on the feedback given and to develop strategies to improve. This may often be seen in purple pen where students have been asked to re-draft some/all parts of the original assessment. Time for this re-drafting may occur in lessons or be factored into homework.
  • Teachers should endeavour to mark formal assessments within 3 weeks of the assessment and to ensure books are marked and up to date at least twice per half term (see Homework area of school website for specific exceptions)
  • Evidence of marking and assessment of students’ work will vary by department, depending on how frequently students are taught (see Homework area of school website)
  • Subjects should offer a range of strategies to feedback and assess student’s work including oral and written. Assessment should recognise strengths and set clear targets for progress.
  • As part of the assessment process, students may assess and provide feedback to their peers or reflect on their own work and what improvements could be made.
  • Marking for basic literacy should take place across all subjects including capital letters and full stops, as well as, accurate spelling of subject specific terminology.
  • Your child’s work will be moderated within subject areas at regular points throughout the year to ensure the accuracy and consistency of assessment.  Assessment levels/grades will be reported to parents at regular intervals throughout the year. Students will also complete an end of year exam assessment for most subjects usually in the summer term.
  • From the central database Senior and Middle Managers will review performance of students. Should underperformance be identified the students’ Head of Year and Head of Faculty will make a decision regarding the correct approach to support your child.
