Network Rail Talk

On 14 January 2026 we were visited by Claire Smith from Network Rail. Claire has worked with us many times over the years to teach our students the importance of railway safety. Arthur Mellows' location is near to a number of major railway routes (and regional branch lines), this means that raising awareness is vital as many of our student use rail crossings on a daily basis.
This was a very powerful assembly that raised the awareness of being careful near railway lines and the dangers when rules are not followed. All assemblies were age appropriate using materials that are used across the UK in schools. In particular the You V Train campaign.
On this visit all students at AMVC took part in a special assembly that focused on a number of important factors. This included:
- Playing on the railway
- Overhead lines
- Third (live) rails
- Signal crossings
Following this assembly, some excellent conversations were had with staff and students about positive and responsible choices regarding personal safety. We have continued these discussions within Lifeskills lessons and tutor time. Moving forward we will continue to work with Network Rail to keep our students safe.
