Cromwell Association Trip to Oxford

On Thursday 3 July, Year 12 Historians visited Magdalen College, Oxford to attend the Cromwell Association Schools Conference. This was to hear and witness great, knowledgeable debates by Historians on questions that are topical and central to our A Level specification (The Stuarts) such as ‘Did Parliament win the main civil war of 1642-46 through the possession of better resources or did the royalists lose it because of military blunders?’
The Historians debating: Peter Gaunt, Ann Hughes, Dr David Smith, Andy Hopper brilliantly conveyed their expertise. They all offered insightful perspectives on the questions, provided great knowledge, engaged passionately and provided advice on exam techniques and transferable skills that can propel our grades.
After the three insightful debates and an hour exploring Oxford. We concluded with a workshop. where our school along with another, in the presence of Ann Hughes, analysed and assessed historical sources on the levellers (who were a political movement during the civil war committed to extended suffrage and religious toleration) a group we study. And this session was extremely engaging as it offered us the opportunity to ask questions and also gather in depth analysis from the very best. As well as developed our evaluation skills which is critical to our source questions.
And as the day came to an end, it concluded humorously with a reference to Oliver Cromwell's infamous quote. “In the Name of God. Go.” A joke appreciated especially by Mrs Price and other teachers.
A MASSIVE thank you from Year 12 Historians to Mrs Price for organising the trip and along with Mr Zimmermann for attending.
