Delivering learning for life within an aspirational culture

Design and Technology

The Design and Technology Department is a continuously evolving and thriving department, committed to helping all students achieve their full potential. Our aim is to offer students a wide range of different and interesting projects, focusing on every aspect of Design and Technology.

In Design and Technology students combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team. All Students will develop a foundation of key skills and knowledge that will enable them to become informed users of products and services, with an understanding of the decisions and factors impacting how things are designed and manufactured.

At Key Stage 3, students follow schemes of work that develop and explore new skills. The complexity of the projects increases as the students’ progress through the Key Stage. Within their projects, students combine practical and intellectual skills with an understanding of aesthetic, technical, cultural, health, social, emotional, economic, industrial and environmental issues. As they do, they evaluate present and past Design and Technology, and its uses and effects. Through Design and Technology students develop confidence in using practical skills and become discriminating users of products. They apply their creative thinking and learn to innovate.  Throughout Key Stage 3, students rotate throughout the department learning skills within Product Design, Engineering and Food Technology.

We offer students the chance to study all 3 KS3 topics areas at KS4, with carefully selected courses at GCSE and Level 2. Courses are a combination of coursework/assignments and theory exams, completed across both year 10 and 11. When students transition to sixth form, we then offer students both A-Level and Level 3 qualifications in Product Design and Engineering respectively, developing skills required for the study of related courses at university, or to support the application for apprenticeships in Design and Engineering sectors.
