World Book Day at AMVC 2026
Students and staff at AMVC celebrated World Book Day on 5 March 2026 with an array of exciting activities and competitions. These included word searches, a costume competition, and a speed-reading competition in the library. The entire school got involved, with every teacher reading a section of a story throughout the day to every class.
Many members of staff took the opportunity to dress up as beloved book characters, and the students were eager to vote for their favourite at lunchtime. From ‘Lady Macbeth’ to ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, there were certainly a lot of amazing costumes to choose from!
The top five winners were: Mrs Beacham for her excellent ‘Lorax’ get up, Mrs Baker-McConnachie for her miserly ‘Ebenezer Scrooge’, Mrs Morley for her glamorous ‘Cruella De Vil’, Ms Townsend as the intimidating ‘Trunchbull’, and Miss Jeffs as the terrifying ‘Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’. The students were buzzing from room to room to see all these awesome costumes and were therefore talking about books and book characters all day. So many students came to join in the voting at lunchtime and couldn’t wait to find out if their favourite costume had won.
We have had a very successful Quick Reads Competition during second lunch too, in which students had to read as many quick reads as they could in one lunchtime. It was won by both Millia Mistry and Maybelle Holtby with a staggering six quick reads each! We also ran a design your own bookshelf competition for Year 7s to win the chance to adopt the shelf and have it up in the library.
The school also had a special visitor for World Book Day, Charley Genever (a local poet who was Poet Laureate for Peterborough) came into the school and ran several poetry workshops with Year 7, 8 and 9 students throughout the day. The students were encouraged to write poetry based on their own identify, and the inspirational atmosphere allowed even those who usually fear poetry to be able to get stuck in with activities such as creating an Ode to something they loved, from football to lasagna!
Special thanks go to everyone who got involved throughout the school, creating book-themed lesson activities, relaying messages to students about when and where to vote, and especially to the many staff who dressed up and helped to show our students that reading is not just enjoyed by English teachers, but is something that is loved by many different people from many different subject areas. The day was an excellent success, so roll on World Book Day 2027!
