P.E.

The PE department is committed to help all students achieve their full potential in Physical Education.  Students are always expected to work hard in lessons and are encouraged to join our extensive extra-curricular programme which is open to all. This timetable is regularly published on the weekly bulletin to students.
 
The department is fully staffed with experienced Physical Educationalists, who are always ready and willing to help and support students throughout their time at the College.

 We have fantastic facilities at the College which consist of:

New Gymnasium, Sports Hall, Fitness Suite and Aerobics Room, purpose built classroom for exam work, extensive playing fields, 6 netball courts which convert to 8 tennis courts in the Summer.  Due for completion in early 2013 is a full all-weather pitch for hockey and football.

Key Stage 3 Physical Education

Year 7, 8 and 9 students are generally taught in sets within the 2 populations of French and German, based on initial physical tests at the beginning of the year together with any assessment grades. These are regularly monitored throughout the year. Students have 4 x 50 minute lessons a fortnight in Years 7 and 8 and 3 lessons in Year 9.

The groups follow the Key Stage 3 schemes of work covering the following activities:

Year 7 and 8

Autumn and Spring Terms

  • Outwitting through Games, Gymnastics, Health and Fitness

Summer Term

  • Athletics, Swimming, Striking and Fielding Games


Year 9

Autumn and Spring Terms 

  • Netball or Football, Volleyball or Badminton, Table Tennis or Trampolining

Summer Term

  • Athletics, Cricket or Rounders, Tennis

 Key Stage 4

All students continue to have 3 x 50 minute lessons throughout Key Stage 4. We cover the major games, health and fitness, trampolining, table tennis, badminton and summer activities.

Examination PE is traditionally strong in the College and we always have over 80 students choosing to follow an examination course. We offer GCSE (AQA Board) and BTEC (Edexcel Board) and advise students on the best choice for them as individuals.

Key Stage 5

A Level Physical Education is taught through the AQA board exam course and is an extremely successful subject.  We also offer BTEC Level 3 Sport as a 6th Form course.

 

 

PE Uniform

Please can parents support their child/children in PE by ensuring that their child has the following kit that is required for each lesson:

  • Green Arthur Mellows Village College PE shirt, available from Chroma Leisure
  • Black shorts, tracksuit bottoms, scort or leggings (no other colour please)
  • Trainers, ideally astroturf trainers which can be used indoors or on the new all-weather pitch  (not plimsolls or pumps please, these are not safe for your child to take part in Physical Education at this level)
  • Green sports top (for colder weather) available from Chroma Leisure
  • Green socks and shin pads
  • Football boots (boys)

We often contact home through planners so please check your child’s planner on a regular basis for information.

Gifted and Talented

We run many teams and traditionally do extremely well at District and County levels. This ranges from our Year 7 footballers as county champions to our golf team who won the schools games at St Ivo.  Our Year 7 netballers were tournament champions and our indoor athletes were runners up at the county tournament. We sent several athletes to county and regional events and 2 qualified for the All England Championships. We know many of our students who are excellent at their chosen sport from Tae Kwondo to motor cross to horse riding to gymnastics and we like to recognise these talents within school.

Exam Courses 

In Key Stage 4
 
 GCSE PE
The PE GCSE uses the AQA examining board, of which 40% of the course assesses practical performance.  While the remaining 60% assesses through 2 written papers of 1hr 15minutes each.  Students who take PE GCSE will gain an additional 6 lessons of PE of which the majority will be studied in a classroom environment.  
 
Paper 1 include: Applied anatomy and physiology, Movement analysis, Physical training.
 
Paper 2 includes: Sport psychology, Socio-cultural influences, Health, fitness and well-being.
 
The practical performance is assessed over 3 sports: one team activity, one individual activity and a third either team/individual.  There is also an Analysis and evaluation of performance to bring about improvement in one activity.
 
 
BTEC

We run the BTEC Level 2 Sport course, which gives students a vocational option to study Sport. Throughout the 2 years students will complete a multiple choice online test and coursework to show their knowledge and understanding. Students study a range of Sport related topics and are assessed in different ways such as presentations, posters, booklets, interviews and articles. All students cover content from four units, they include:-   

  • Unit 1: Fitness testing and training - studies the components of fitness, methods of training and testing. 
  • Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance – investigates 2 sports and focuses on the use of officials, rules, regulations, scoring systems and performance analysis. 
  • Unit 3: The mind and sports performance – looks at topics such as arousal, anxiety, motivation, personality and self confidence
  • Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for sports performance - looks at how the body works and is used effectively for sport in relation to the bones, muscles, cardiac and respiratory systems.

In Key Stage 5

A Level PE

A level Physical Education is taught as a linear course, with all of its formal assessments taking place at the end of year 13.  It is taught through the AQA exam board, and involves two theoretical and one practical unit.

BTEC Level 3
For the National qualification, students study BTEC Level 3 in Sport, our students have always been very successful.  The course develops students’ understanding at a higher level, through different vocational scenarios. Students study a variety of core and optional modules, which allows for greater interest for our students.  All levels of study will include a mandatory unit in Anatomy and Physiology which is a written 1 hr 30minute paper. 
 
The 2year linear course for the Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A Level) in Sport includes the following 4 units: Anatomy & Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being, Professional Development in the sports Industry and Practical Sports Performance.
 
The 2year linear course for the Foundation Diplomas (equivalent to 1.5 A Levels) in Sport includes all previous units with an additional 3 units in: Sports Leadership, Sports Psychology and Application of Fitness Testing.
